Fort Bend County Republican Party Chairman Bobby Eberle issued the following statement denouncing County Judge KP George's use of county resources to protest Senate bill 147. The bill, put forward by State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, would ban the foreign governments of China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea from owning land in Texas.
"KP George's latest actions are both pathetic and disappointing, and they show that George is willing to resort to partisan political attacks at the expense of the residents of Fort Bend County."
"Senate Bill 147, sponsored by State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, is designed to prohibit the governments of America's enemies from purchasing land in Texas. Instead of comprehending the national security and economic implications from such land purchases by countries such as Iran and North Korea, George plays the race card for cheap political points."
"KP George claims SB 147 is 'blatant discrimination,' but the question for him is whether totalitarian regimes who want to destroy America should be granted even greater access to American resources. The answer is NO."
"KP George continues to fail residents of Fort Bend County by putting partisanship over security and common sense."
Kolkhorst said her bill was similarly prompted by concerns over "growing ownership" of Texas land by foreign entities.
"The time to address adversarial countries acquiring land is before it becomes widespread, not after they already control substantial amounts of Texas," she said. Kolkhorst also said in a statement that the bill "will make crystal clear that the prohibitions do not apply to United States citizens and lawful permanent residents."
She also added that the bill "does not prohibit foreign business investment in Texas, because companies may still do business by leasing land and buildings."
"Communist China, America's greatest foe, is on a bender," Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller wrote in an op-ed last year that called for such a ban. "They are buying up farmland across the United States and Texas."
In October, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives called for an investigation into foreign land investment nationally. Former President Donald Trump, who is running for the White House again, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is considered a top GOP presidential contender should he run, have recently said they support such bans. And citing the Chinese Communist Party, U.S. Representative Chip Roy, Republican-Austin, proposed federal legislation this week that would similarly ban Chinese land investments.
Governor Greg Abbott said that he would sign a proposed bill banning citizens and foreign entities from four countries, including China, from buying Texas land.
Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst filed such a bill that would also include a ban on the following foreign governments of China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia from purchasing land to prevent foreign influence because of dictator policies.
Filed by Brenham Republican, Senator Kolkhorst, Senate Bill 147 would also prohibit the purchase or acquisition of property by a "government entity of the four countries; by a company headquartered in the four countries; and by a company "directly or indirectly controlled" by a government of the four countries.
Land in Texas belongs to Texas and its lawful citizens. Despite race or religion, legality is a factor because of open borders and the compromise of national security and the lack of protection from the federal government.
